What Are PEX Pipes?
PEX pipes (Cross-linked Polyethylene) are advanced plumbing pipes created by chemically or physically cross-linking polyethylene molecules. This cross-linking process transforms standard polyethylene into a thermoset material with superior properties for water distribution systems.
The cross-linking creates three-dimensional molecular bonds that give PEX pipes exceptional characteristics:
-
Enhanced temperature resistance – operates from 0°C to 95°C
-
Improved pressure handling – maintains integrity under stress
-
Chemical resistance – unaffected by most water treatments
-
Flexibility – bends without breaking, reducing fitting requirements
-
Longevity – 50+ year expected service life
PEX was developed in the 1960s and has been used in European plumbing systems since the 1970s. Today, billions of meters of PEX pipe are installed worldwide, making it the preferred choice for modern hot and cold water distribution systems.
Why PEX for Kuwait?
Kuwait's desalinated water and hot climate make PEX ideal. Unlike copper, PEX doesn't corrode in aggressive water conditions. Our PE-Xa pipes handle Kuwait's summer hot water temperatures (up to 85°C at the tank) without degradation.
Types of PEX: Understanding PE-Xa, PE-Xb, and PE-Xc
PEX pipes are classified by their cross-linking method, which affects the degree of cross-linking and resulting performance characteristics:
PE-Xa (Peroxide Method / Engel Method)
This is the type we supply. PE-Xa is manufactured using the peroxide (Engel) method, which achieves the highest cross-linking degree of approximately ≥85%. The cross-linking occurs uniformly throughout the entire pipe wall during the extrusion process.
Advantages of PE-Xa:
-
Highest cross-linking degree (≥85%)
-
Thermal memory – can be returned to original shape with heat if kinked
-
Best flexibility among PEX types
-
Highest resistance to stress cracking
-
Compatible with expansion fitting systems (Q&E)
-
Superior long-term pressure resistance
PE-Xb (Silane Method)
Cross-linked using silane compounds after extrusion. Achieves 65-70% cross-linking. More rigid than PE-Xa with no thermal memory. Typically lower cost but with reduced flexibility.
PE-Xc (Electron Beam Method)
Cross-linked by electron beam radiation after extrusion. Achieves 60-70% cross-linking. The most rigid PEX type with uneven cross-linking (higher at outer wall). No thermal memory.
